Heroin is an illegal, highly addictive opioid drug that has a rapid effect on the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2017, nearly 494,000 people in the United States reported using heroin in the past year and over 15,000 people died from drug overdoses involving heroin.
